What is a neck lift?
As we age, the neck tissues become loose and saggy. Some people also store excess fat in their neck, which leads to a “double chin” or “turkey neck.” Almost everybody experiences this relaxation in their neck tissues at some point as they age. The platysma muscle, a very thin muscle that covers the more important deeper structures of the neck, begins to relax causing sagging. The platysma muscle is underneath the skin and a layer of fatty tissue. The thickness of the fatty layer varies from patient to patient. Fortunately, a neck lift minimizes these effects by lifting and tightening the soft tissues giving patients a smooth, toned and more youthful-looking neck. It also redefines the jawline leading to a striking improvement of the patient’s profile.
How is a neck lift performed?
Since there are various issues that can be treated with a neck lift, our expert neck lift surgeon, Dr. John Standefer, will develop a custom procedure plan unique to your needs.
At Fresh Image, we perform all neck lifts using local anesthesia with sedation. Very small incisions will be made underneath your chin and/or behind your ear. Dr. Standefer will work through those incisions to manipulate the platysma muscle before securing it with a suture into its tightened position. If there is excess fat and skin in the area, it will be removed using liposuction. If you wish, Dr. Standefer can use the fat to perform a fat transfer when performing a neck lift, where he will inject it in areas of your face which have lost volume due to aging. Finally, any excess skin is trimmed. Sutures are used to close the incisions.

What can I expect after a neck lift?
Bruising, swelling and mild discomfort are common after a neck lift, but will likely resolve fully within 10-14 days. Temporary numbness is also possible. It is important to keep your head elevated as much as possible, even while sleeping, for 2-3 weeks following surgery to help reduce swelling. Strenuous activities should be avoided for 3-4 weeks. At the end of the recovery period, our patients love their tightened, more youthful neck and don’t miss their “turkey neck” or “double chin.”
